I have always loved jackalopes. The idea of a tiny rabbit running around with antlers fascinated me as a child. Growing up in the countryside in Oregon, I spent my fair share of time roaming the fields and forests in search of this magical cryptid. There is something so special about chasing those little bits of magic in the world as a child. Whether you’re looking for secret gardens or dreaming of riding unicorns, we should hold fast to our sense of wonder and curiosity.
I’m embarrassed to say I was well into my teenage years before I found out that my favorite woodland critter was in fact, a myth. I guess this one was left off of the “things that aren’t real” chat I had with my parents. Oops!
Despite this realization, I still smile every time I see one mounted on a wall in a tavern or printed on a mug in a gift shop. They are their own special brand of magic sprinkled across the world and they have become one of my favorite “animals” to spot in the wild.
For me, jackalopes symbolize the magic in the world, a tall tale that has been immortalized throughout history. For this little myth, we have Douglas & Ralph Herrick to thank. What may have started as a prank is now a legend. May we all be brave enough to craft a little bit of magic before we become myths ourselves.
